Transfer all our deducted funds in one week or face industrial disruptions, labour warns government

Labour unions in Ghana have issued a stern ultimatum to the Ministry of Finance and the Controller and Accountant General over the non-transfer of their deducted funds to designated institutions.

The unions expressed their frustration with the government’s failure to credit their Tier-2 Pensions and SSNIT contributions since June 2023, as well as other third-party contributions since December 2023.

According to Angel Carbonu, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the last time payments were made to the various Tier-2 Trusts was in June 2023. He raised concerns that the government has been deducting money from workers’ salaries but failing to pay it to the designated institutions, potentially jeopardizing retirees’ compensation and pensions.

Carbonu also questioned the whereabouts of the deducted funds, implying a lack of transparency in the handling of workers’ money. The labour unions have given the Ministry of Finance and the Controller and Accountant General until April 26, 2024, to transfer all the deducted funds to their rightful organizations. Failure to meet this deadline could result in industrial disruptions, warned the unions.

Mr. Carbonu demanded clarity from the Ministry of Finance and the Controller and Accountant General Department, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in the handling of workers’ contributions. The unions are determined to hold the government accountable for their actions and ensure that workers’ funds are properly credited to the designated institutions.
