The Chief Executive Officer of the Railways Development Authority, Mr. Yaw Owusu, has revealed that the manufacturer of the new train involved in a collision on the Tema Railway line will cover the cost of repairs for the damaged parts.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Railways Development on Thursday, April 18, it was confirmed that the collision occurred during a site acceptance test when the new DMU train collided with a stationary vehicle.
Mr. Owusu, speaking on the incident on TV3 News 360, mentioned that the damaged train has been taken to the station for assessment, and the extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
He emphasized that since the train has not been officially handed over to the Ghanaian government, the manufacturer, Pesa Corporation, will be responsible for the costs of repairs. He also mentioned that the manufacturer likely has insurance to cover any additional damages.
Addressing the possibility of local expertise to repair the train or the need to transport it back to the manufacturer, Mr. Yaw Owusu expressed confidence that the repair work can be done in Ghana itself. He mentioned that the manufacturer has personnel on the ground as part of the site acceptance test.
Although the Ministry’s statement confirmed no injuries in the collision, minor damage was reported in the driver’s cab of the train. It was also noted that the vehicle involved in the collision was unnamed, and the location was not an authorized level crossing.
