The managers of Ghana’s economy are like the managers of Manchester United, IEA’s Kwakye

Ghana’s economy is experiencing some turmoil, according to the Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye. He compared the mismanagement of Ghana’s economy to the poor handling of Manchester United, a renowned English Premier League giant.

Dr. Kwakye expressed his concerns about the management of both entities, stating that the managers of Ghana’s economy and Manchester United seem clueless in addressing their challenges. He emphasized that the solutions to their problems are not complex and should be addressed promptly.

In a recent post on his platform, Dr. Kwakye highlighted the similarities between the two scenarios and questioned the competency of the managers in charge. Despite these challenges, he acknowledged that the presidential candidates are proposing good policies ahead of the 2024 general elections.

One of the promises made by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is to ensure 100% Ghanaian ownership of mineral resources if elected into power. This commitment aims to address the perception that Ghanaians do not have full ownership of the country’s minerals under the current mining framework.

Dr. Bawumia articulated this promise during his inaugural regional tour in the Eastern Region, where he engaged in discussions with religious leaders. He stressed the importance of maximizing the benefits of Ghana’s natural resources and empowering Ghanaians to have full ownership of these resources.

On the other hand, Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), promised to run his administration with not more than 60 ministers and deputies if re-elected in 2024. This decision aligns with his goal of forming a lean and efficient government to enhance productivity and reduce bureaucracy.

Dr. Kwakye acknowledged the positive impact of these policies proposed by the presidential candidates but raised concerns about their implementation once elected into office. He questioned whether these promises would deliver the desired outcomes and emphasized the importance of holding the leaders accountable for their commitments.

As the 2024 general elections draw nearer, Ghanaians are keen on evaluating the promises made by the presidential candidates and ensuring that they prioritize the best interests of the country and its citizens. It remains to be seen how these policies will be implemented and whether they will lead to the economic transformation and development that Ghana seeks.
