The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has taken action against individuals suspected of being involved in the theft of five Biometric Verification Devices (BVD).
The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, confirmed that the suspects have been handed over to the police to face the consequences of their actions.
During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Dr Quaicoe mentioned that the police initiated an investigation after the EC reported the missing BVDs about a month ago. He emphasized the importance of holding the culprits accountable for stealing state property, stating that they have been interdicted and are undergoing a security investigation.
Dr Quaicoe reassured the public that there is no need to panic over the missing BVDs as they have not been activated. However, the Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, raised concerns about the timeline of the devices’ disappearance, suggesting that it had been missing for more than a month.
The Minority in Parliament also expressed worry about the potential impact of the missing BVDs on the upcoming December elections, urging the police to take urgent action. The issue came to light after NDC legislators raised the alarm, bringing attention to the matter.
It is essential for all individuals involved in the investigation to be held accountable if found guilty, highlighting the need for transparency and integrity in the electoral process. The EC is committed to ensuring that the upcoming elections proceed smoothly and without any disruptions caused by the missing BVDs.
