The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, has emphasized that declaring strikes through press conferences is illegal.

According to him, the law requires unions to write to their employers and give notice to the NLC at least seven days in advance.

During an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Mr. Ofosu Asamoah highlighted the importance of following the legal process when it comes to strikes. He stated, “Strikes are legal but the law says you have to write to your employer and give notice to the NLC for a period of not less than seven days.”

Mr. Ofosu Asamoah also addressed the issue of trust between labour unions and the government, noting that there is a high level of mistrust which leads to industrial actions despite government assurances to address their demands. He stressed that the NLC cannot show bias towards either party in these situations.

In terms of the ongoing negotiations with teacher unions for improved conditions of service, Mr. Ofosu Asamoah explained that the disagreements are primarily financial issues. As a result, the Finance Ministry has been involved in the discussions to find a resolution.

It is important for all parties involved to follow the legal procedures outlined for strikes and negotiations to ensure a fair and peaceful resolution to labor disputes.
