Renowned American singer-songwriter, Stevie Wonder was recently honoured with a Bridge Builder Award by the Diaspora African Forum (DAF) in Accra.

The award ceremony took place at the Labadi Beach Hotel during a special dinner party organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to celebrate Stevie’s 74th birthday.

The Bridge Builder Award is a prestigious honor given to individuals who have made significant contributions to bridging the gap between Africa and the African Diaspora. In recognition of his efforts, Stevie Wonder was officially granted Ghanaian citizenship after taking the Oath of Allegiance at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House, the seat of government.

The event symbolizes Stevie Wonder’s official integration into Ghanaian society, a move that was met with jubilation and excitement. The presentation of the Bridge Builder Award serves as a formal acknowledgment of the artist’s positive influence and inspiration within the Diasporan community.

Speaking at a press conference before the dinner, Dr. Erieka Bennett, Founder and Head of Mission at DAF, commended Stevie Wonder for his dedication to promoting unity among people of Black descent. The singer expressed his happiness at becoming a Ghanaian citizen and emphasized the importance of the spirit of unity and belonging.

Stevie Wonder joins a distinguished list of personalities who have received the Bridge Builder Award in the past, including Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, John Agyekum Kufuor, Alex Dadey, Dr. Edem Adzogenu, and Akwasi Agyeman. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to strengthening the bond between Africa and its diaspora community.
