The Minority in Parliament has responded to the Majority caucus’s criticism of the Speaker’s decision to adjourn the House, calling it abrupt.
Ahmed Ibrahim, the 1st Deputy Minority Whip, defended the Speaker’s actions, stating that he was well within his constitutional rights to adjourn the session. He mentioned that the adjournment had been planned and agreed upon in advance.
During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Ibrahim emphasized that the Speaker’s decision to adjourn was premeditated and known to the House leadership. He questioned the Majority’s objection to the adjournment, highlighting that the Speaker’s authority in such matters is unquestionable.
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had requested an extraordinary sitting of Parliament soon after the adjournment. In a memo addressed to Speaker Alban Bagbin, Afenyo-Markin presented five legal justifications for the demand, urging the Speaker to reconvene Parliament within seven days.
Despite the demand for an extraordinary sitting, Ibrahim stated that he was yet to confirm whether the Speaker had received the memo. The unfolding events in Parliament reflect the ongoing tensions between the Minority and Majority sides, highlighting the complexities of legislative proceedings in the House.
