The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has disclosed that an investigation into the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has been ongoing since July last year.
According to the OSP, the Scholarship Secretariat is among the institutions currently under scrutiny for allegations of corruption and corruption-related activities.
In a statement, the OSP stated, “The Office of the Special Prosecutor commenced investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences at the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat circa July 2023. The investigation is active and ongoing.”
The revelations were made in response to a complaint titled “Report of Suspected Corruption and Corruption-Related Offences in the award of Scholarships by the Registrar of Ghana Scholarship Secretariat- Kingsley Oppong Agyeman.”
The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has recently come under scrutiny after a Fourth Estate investigation highlighted instances where scholarships were awarded to individuals from affluent backgrounds, contrary to the mission of offering scholarships to deserving but underprivileged students.
Furthermore, the investigation uncovered cases where influential figures were granted double scholarships, raising concerns about the integrity of the scholarship allocation process.
The controversy surrounding the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has raised questions about transparency and fairness in the distribution of scholarships, as well as the need for strict guidelines to prevent abuse of the system.
It is essential for such investigations to be carried out diligently to promote accountability and ensure that scholarship opportunities are allocated fairly to those who truly need them.
