Shinzo Abe autopsy report: Has it been released?
In the hours following the announcement by the current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida that the 67-year-old had suffered grave injuries in the shooting, the NHK broadcaster and the Kyodo news agency broke the news of Abe’s passing.
A male suspect, 41, was reportedly detained at the site, according to the police.
Abe was promptly moved to Kashihara City’s Nara Medical University.
When Abe was taken to the hospital, NHK and Kyodo news agencies reported that he seemed to be in a condition of cardiac arrest despite originally being awake and alert.
A local fire department officer was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that Abe was not breathing and that his heart had stopped while being evacuated to the hospital.
Abe was declared dead by the hospital in the afternoon, several hours later.
