Sammi Awuku woos European Lotteries in illegal gambling fight

The European Lotteries have been urged to assist the National Lottery Authority (NLA) in its efforts to combat unlawful gambling and uphold responsible gaming standards by Samuel Awuku, the NLA’s director-general.

From February 21 to February 23, 2024, the European Lotteries held its Public Order Seminar with the theme “Enforcing Gambling Regulations: Significance and Challenges in Brussels.”

It was rotated by representatives of the EL member bodies, who discussed industry practices, regulations, and law enforcement related to illegal gambling in their respective jurisdictions.

Mr. Awuku was asked to speak as a guest speaker in order to illuminate perspectives from Africa and Ghana that go beyond those of Europe.

He called for cooperation with the European Lotteries in the fight against illegal lottery and gambling in Ghana, while also discussing the steps taken by the NLA to stop these activities.

In addition, Mr. Awuku urged the EL to grant Ghana observer status and collaborate with the NLA on good causes. He also lamented the negative effects of illegal gambling on society, which he pointed out can be severe and result in the government losing tax revenue.

He disclosed the following about some of the tactics used in the battle against illicit gaming: “Using the security agencies outfitted with cutting-edge technology to zero in on and apprehend online lottery scammers.”

Swoops: Assisting in the nationwide arrest and disruption of illicit lottery operations by collaborating with a combined police and military team. raids carried out by the Gaming Commission to stop equipment and shut down unlicensed gaming establishments.

While praising Ghana for its efforts to combat illicit lotteries and gambling, EL Secretary-General Mr. Arjan Van ‘T Veer requested that the NLA formally apply for observer status.

Additionally, Mr. Van T’ Veer requested that the NLA focus on implementing responsible gaming, especially with regard to minors.

David Lamptey, the acting director of SBI, and Maame Kesewaah Dolphyne, the head of corporate affairs, accompanied the director general.
