The General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has raised concerns about the recent decision by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to sell its hotels. Koomson argued that SSNIT’s rationale for the sale, citing underperformance of assets and the need to restore profitability, is inaccurate.
SSNIT’s Director-General, Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, stated that the trust is still evaluating its assets to make informed decisions. He refuted claims of imminent collapse, pointing out that SSNIT has never defaulted on pension payments and expressed confidence in its sustainability.
However, Koomson revealed that ILO assessments warned SSNIT of potential collapse by 2036 if the scheme is not reorganized. Despite this, he questioned the need for selling hotels, emphasizing that SSNIT is not currently facing losses.
He also criticized President Akufo-Addo’s comments on the issue, calling them unnecessary. Koomson questioned the President’s involvement and urged him to direct his remarks towards SSNIT management rather than attacking the unions.
The sale of SSNIT hotels has garnered mixed reactions, with stakeholders expressing their concerns over the trust’s decision-making process. It remains to be seen how SSNIT will address the issues raised by labor unions and the wider public.
