Local Government Minister Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah has expressed disappointment with the quality of construction work at the Mallam Market in Accra, describing it as “extremely poor.” During his tour of markets in Accra, he deemed the current work as unacceptable and ordered the contractors to redo the facility.
In a firm tone, Mr. Korsah emphasized that the government paid for quality work and that inferior materials were used in the construction, which goes against government specifications. He stated, “The entire thing as it stands is rejected. I don’t think we should let this pass for using government money.”
The Minister made it clear that the government would not bear any cost for the substandard work done, and it is the contractor’s responsibility to rectify the situation. He highlighted the importance of delivering quality work when government funds are involved.
However, the contractors have defended the current state of the market. Dr. Andrews Kwablah, CEO of MKA Consult, explained that the site presented significant challenges due to the mushy ground recovered with refuse before construction. He disputed the claim of inferior materials being used, stating that lab tests were conducted to ensure the materials’ quality.
Despite the ongoing dispute, the market sheds have already been occupied by traders. The issue of the construction quality at the Mallam Market raises concerns about the use of government funds and the responsibility of contractors to deliver on agreed specifications.
