CEO of Independent Power Generators Ghana, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, has shared his insights on the composition of the board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in a recent statement to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Dr. Apetorgbor emphasized the importance of reforming the board composition of ECG to enhance its performance and efficiency.
Expressing his concerns about privatizing ECG, Dr. Apetorgbor highlighted the potential risks to accessibility, affordability, and stability of electricity services if the company were to be privatized. He stressed the significance of retaining public ownership to ensure accountability, equitable access, and strategic governance control over this vital national asset.
Dr. Apetorgbor suggested that instead of privatization, Ghana should focus on strengthening the governance structure of ECG, ensuring all-inclusive representation on the board, regulatory oversight, and community engagement for responsible consumption. By following these recommendations, Ghana can achieve sustainable electricity provision and foster inclusive development for all citizens.
He also referenced the prior privatization of ECG to Power Distribution Services (PDS) and the challenges that arose from that decision. Dr. Apetorgbor emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences and embracing innovative solutions to overcome the challenges of energy delivery in Ghana.
Ultimately, Dr. Apetorgbor recommended maintaining public ownership of ECG, citing the potential negative impacts of privatization on electricity services and national development. He urged President Akufo-Addo to consider the benefits of public ownership and the need for a reformed board composition at ECG to facilitate positive changes in the company’s operations.
