Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has challenged Political Analyst Professor Smart Sarpong to provide specific details of a survey indicating that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is ahead in the presidential race.
In an appearance on TV3’s New Day, Nana Yaa Jantuah expressed skepticism about the survey results, questioning the methodology and logic behind a flagbearer being more popular than his party.
The debate comes amid an exciting political landscape in Ghana as the country gears up for the upcoming elections. Recent survey results by Professor Smart Sarpong show the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leading in popularity among voters, with 38.8% support compared to the NPP’s 34.5%.
The survey, conducted in April 2024 across all 16 regions of Ghana, revealed that a significant portion of voters, 23.1%, remain undecided, potentially playing a crucial role in the final outcome. Smaller parties collectively hold a marginal 3.6% of voter support.
When it comes to preferred presidential candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP leads with 38.9% support, slightly ahead of the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama, who has 36.1% support. Undecided voters constitute 21.4%, with other candidates collectively accounting for 3.6%.
The survey also delved into the main factors influencing voter decisions, with competence, the track records of presidential candidates, and party affiliation being key considerations. Additionally, some respondents admitted that financial inducements could sway their vote.
Unemployment emerged as the most pressing issue for voters, with economic improvements, poor infrastructure, illegal mining, LGBTQ rights, corruption, and sanitation also being significant concerns.
