Actor Paul Franklin Dano was born in America on June 19, 1984.

Dano was born in New York City, the son of homemaker Gladys  and financial advisor Paul A. Dano. Sarah is the name of his younger sister. Dano was born and raised in New York City, where he first attended the Browning School.

Dano’s family initially settled in Wilton, Connecticut, before moving to New Canaan, Connecticut, when he was a young boy. After graduating from Wilton High School in 2002 and enrolling at Eugene Lang College in New York City, Dano completed his study there. was active in community theater, and his parents were urged to move him to New York while he was performing in New Canaan.

At the age of twelve, Dano made his Broadway debut with George C. Scott and Charles Durning in John Tillinger’s revival of Inherit the Wind. He made an appearance on an episode of Smart Guy and played a supporting role in The Newcomers, a family drama from 2000. He appeared in multiple episodes of The Sopranos as Patrick Whalen (season 4).

When Dano was sixteen years old, he appeared in L.I.E. as Howie Blitzer, a teenage kid who falls for a middle-aged ephebophile (Brian Cox) (2001).  Then he played a high school student whose life is upended when his fiancée gets pregnant in the television movie Too Young to Be a Dad.

As Martin Blythe, he made an appearance in The Emperor’s Club in 2002. In the 2004 film Taking Lives starring Angelina Jolie and Ethan Hawke, he had a little part as the young Martin Asher. Dano also acted alongside Chris Marquette, Emile Hirsch, and Elisha Cuthbert in the sleeper success The Girl Next Door. He appeared in The King and The Ballad of Jack and Rose in 2005 as a supporting actor.

In 2010, he played a genius inventor in Knight and Day, an action thriller starring Tom Cruise. In 2011, he had a supporting role in the big-budget science fiction film Cowboys and Aliens. Dano appeared with Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel in the Italian comedy-drama Youth.

In 2016, Paul Dano played the role of Hank Thompson in Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan’s absurdist black comedy film Swiss Army Man. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, and opened in theaters on June 24. Critics left generally favorable reviews of the film.

Dano and Ethan Hawke co-starred in the widely praised Broadway revival of Sam Shepard’s True West at the Roundabout Theater Company’s American Airlines Theater in New York from December 27, 2018, to March 17, 2019.

Dano was hired in October 2019 to play The Riddler in Matt Reeves’ next superhero movie The Batman. Dano was in mind when Reeves created the character after seeing Dano’s portrayal of Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy.

His performance in L.I.E. (2001) garnered him the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance, while his portrayal as Dwayne Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine earned him praise (2006). He was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for his twin performances as Paul and Eli Sunday in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood.

Since the 2010s, Dano has garnered praise for performances as Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy (2014) and as John Tibeats in 12 Years a Slave (2013), Alex Jones in Prisoners (2013), and John Tibeats. The latter part earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also portrayed Burt Fabelman in The Fabelmans and Edward Nashton/The Riddler in The Batman (2022). (2022)

With the drama picture Wildlife (2018), which is based on the Richard Ford novel, Dano makes his directorial debut. Together with his partner Zoe Kazan, he wrote the screenplay. He received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie in 2018 for his role in the Showtime miniseries Escape at Dannemora.
