Residents of Mallam, located along the ‘borla’ road in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, took to the streets on Thursday in protest, demanding that the 1km road be asphalted.
The group of around one hundred residents marched with police officers by their side, carrying placards with messages urging the authorities to address the issue. Some of the slogans on the placards read “No road, no vote.”
Despite the presence of a heap of stones and coarse sand on the sides of the road, the residents were not convinced that any real efforts were being made to address their concerns. Abel Tetteh, the leader of the group, expressed their disappointment in the lack of respect shown by local authorities and the failure of the Member of Parliament (MP) and assembly members to take action.
Tetteh raised questions about the government’s commitment to asphalt the roads, highlighting that other neighborhoods in Accra have already received asphalt roads while they continue to wait for theirs. The residents are now making a direct appeal to the government to step in and provide the necessary assistance to improve their road conditions.
In Tetteh’s words, “We don’t want the MP to come again because the MP has failed us, and the assembly members too have failed us…we the residents concerned, residents of Bola Road, are tired of the road and the dust for 30 years now we are not okay with the dust.” The group is calling on the government to fulfill their promise of providing asphalt roads and putting an end to their ongoing struggle with dusty and poorly maintained roads.
