The National Labour Commission (NLC) has set a two-week deadline for the three pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana to finalize negotiations with the government regarding their concerns.
The unions, which include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), have been in talks with the government over their conditions of service.
Earlier this month, the nationwide strike by the unions was suspended following an interim injunction by the NLC to allow for negotiations with relevant stakeholders. Addressing the media after a meeting with the NLC in Accra, the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah, expressed optimism about reaching a resolution within the two-week timeframe.
“We have not been able to finalize the negotiations, so we informed the commission and they have given us an additional two weeks to ensure that we make progress. On the 2nd of May, we will provide an update on the work done so far,” Musah stated.
He also mentioned that the next step for the unions is to engage with the employer in good faith for the benefit of Ghana.
