Nkawkaw: Church of Pentecost takes action to fix deadly highway potholes

On Sunday, February 18, 2024, members of the Church of Pentecost, Ghana, teamed up with their lead pastor to patch potholes on the Accra-Kumasi highways.

However, the aforementioned extraordinary initiative is a reaction to the startling number of fatalities and injuries brought on by collisions along the highway in the Kwahu West Municipality’s Nkawanda sections.

Also, despite repeated pleas from commuters and residents, authorities and other high-ranking personnel have failed to address the hazardous conditions of the road, leading to tragic consequences.

In addition, it was noted one after the other that numerous reports from users of the Accra-Kumasi road have highlighted and complained bitterly about the perilous state of the Nkawanda segments. Nothing was done, and yet the entire community still suffers from that since they always do their daily routines on the same road.

In the meantime, Nkawkaw-based Agoo FM has consistently raised concerns about the deteriorating road conditions, urging government intervention to prioritize repairs as an urgent matter. It was noted that they waited and waited, but there was no proper result from the government.

The churchgoers and their pastor took matters into their own hands, picking up shovels and filling materials to fix the dangerous potholes out of a sense of duty to their community and a desire to stop more tragedies.

Nonetheless, their actions underscore the urgent need for authorities to address the infrastructure deficiencies that endanger lives daily.

The Church of Pentecost’s New Jejeti District Pastor and his committed male and female members set out on Sunday, February 18, 2024, to fix the dangerous section of the road that has become a death trap for drivers.

But in an interview with Agoo FM News, Pastor Stephen Obeng Asare expressed his concerns about the dangerous condition of the road and the startling number of innocent lives it is taking.

However, in an earnest plea directed towards the government, Pastor Asare urged swift action to ensure the road’s permanent repair, highlighting that their efforts were only a temporary solution to a longstanding problem.

Precisely, the entire scene was one of collective determination, with both men and women shouldering the burden of labor. Some people even carried pans on their heads, while others utilized wheelbarrows to transport sand from nearby bushes, all in a concerted effort to fill the hazardous potholes.

Categorically and amidst their endeavors, the participants, representing the church community, issued a heartfelt appeal to the relevant authorities, urging them to intervene and prevent further loss of life.

Meanwhile, with greater consideration from the church and recounting the harrowing toll of accidents along the road, they shared sad stories, including even the tragic sight of an exceptional innocent child left orphaned beside the lifeless bodies of her parents following a devastating crash.
