Renowned Nigerian singer, actress, and songwriter, Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. The iconic singer reportedly collapsed after performing at a birthday event in Banana Island, Lagos, for Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
According to The Guardian Newspaper, Onwenu was rushed to a hospital in Victoria Island where she was pronounced dead. The family has not yet confirmed her death.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She was known for her powerful vocals and hit songs like “One Love.”
Aside from her music career, Onwenu also ventured into acting in Nollywood films and received several awards for her contributions to the entertainment industry. She was hailed as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.
In addition to her artistic endeavors, Onwenu was involved in politics and was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013. She later served as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
Throughout her career, Onyeka Onwenu received recognition for her impact on Nigerian society, including the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. She was also acknowledged as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations.
