Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, also known as Tycoon, is currently on trial for the alleged murder of Victoria Dapaah, also known as Maadwoa, in Kumasi.
The incident took place on April 20, 2023, when Twumasi, a member of the SWAT Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, shot and killed the 26-year-old woman in the suburb of Adum.
Despite initial reports claiming that Twumasi had died in custody, he appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. Family members of the deceased were present in court on Monday, April 15, 2024, and reportedly walked out in tears as a video recording of the alleged shooting was played in court.
The court also admitted a telephone conversation between the accused and another woman as evidence. State prosecutors attempted to present a caution statement as evidence, which was challenged by the defense lawyers on the grounds that it was obtained under duress.
The defense argued that an independent witness was not present during the taking of the statement, raising procedural concerns. However, the prosecution maintained that the accused had chosen to speak in his native language, indicating his literacy.
In light of these objections, proceedings were adjourned to May 6, 2024, to allow the court to review the legal arguments presented. The trial is ongoing as both sides present their case in the courtroom.
