The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission for Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, has declared that there is no critical data on the missing computers of the Commission that might compromise the credibility of the 2024 elections.
During a news conference on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, Asare addressed misunderstandings over the gadgets that have been reported missing.
He asserts that, in contrast to the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) allegations regarding missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) belonging to the EC, only five computers owned by the Commission—and not the BVDs—were lost.
The matter was brought to light on Tuesday, March 19, when the Minority caucus in Parliament expressed worries, claiming that seven BVDs had vanished from the EC’s property.
Dr. Asare did, however, restate that the Commission’s biometric devices were all safely secured in order to ensure that the next elections would go forward as planned.
He gave the people the assurance that no important material that would jeopardize the election process was on the missing computers.
“It’s true that five computers have been taken, and we’re ready for the election. There are no private documents on these PCs. They don’t present any hazards,” he declared.
Additionally, Dr. Asare clarified any misunderstandings regarding Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) and Biometric Verification devices (BVDs) by highlighting the differences between the two.
“BVDs are used for registration; BVRs are used for verification.” To be used, the two devices need to be linked. The BVDs cannot be used if they are stolen,” he clarified.
