Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu-Banahene, is warning students about the dangers of skin bleaching.
She expressed concern about the increasing number of students in second cycle institutions in the region who are using bleaching creams to lighten their skin.
During the 26th matriculation ceremony of the Holy Family Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Berekum, the Regional Minister emphasized the health risks associated with skin bleaching. She urged parents to stop purchasing bleaching creams for their children, as it can lead to short- and long-term health issues, including skin diseases like cancer.
Madam Owusu-Banahene encouraged health personnel to educate patients, especially those who bleach their skin, about the harmful effects of using chemicals on their bodies. She stressed the importance of healthcare workers in disseminating information about the risks of skin bleaching to the public.
In light of the government’s efforts to improve the health system, the Regional Minister called for the training of well-equipped healthcare professionals. She emphasized the need for specialized nurses to address the healthcare needs of the region effectively.
Additionally, Madam Owusu-Banahene advised the College management to uphold standards and train more preventive and specialized nurses to meet the demand for healthcare services in the region.
