Rafael Caro Quintero, a drug lord from Mexico who is wanted by the US, has reportedly been detained in the northern state of Chihuahua.
According to local media, Mr. Quintero, who is accused of killing a US narcotics enforcement agent in 1985, was detained in the city of Guachochi.
For any information that resulted in his capture, the US has promised $20 million (£17 million).
After serving 28 years in prison for the murder of Enrique Camarena, Mr. Quintero was released by a Mexican court in 2013.
Because Mr. Quintero should have been tried in a state court rather than a federal one, the judge reduced his 40-year sentence.
The murder altered the drug trafficking fight and put strain on US-Mexico relations at the time.
Mr. Quintero was one of the influential Guadalajara Cartel’s three founding members.
