Former President John Mahama has emphasized the crucial role that journalism plays in addressing the pressing environmental issues in Ghana.
He expressed disappointment in the media’s failure to effectively hold the government accountable for critical matters such as illegal mining (galamsey), deforestation, and deteriorating sanitation.
In a post commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2024, themed “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” Mahama highlighted the ongoing degradation of the nation’s water bodies and forests, citing significant threats to the environment, as well as the health and livelihoods of communities.
As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, Mahama stressed the importance of the media in exposing harmful activities, inspiring action from society and relevant authorities. He affirmed his commitment to fostering a stronger partnership between the government and the media to protect natural resources for future generations.
Mahama noted that collaboration with the media would lead to a more transparent and accountable framework that prioritizes sustainable development and environmental conservation. He urged everyone to recognize the critical role of journalism in confronting the environmental crisis and shaping a better future for all.
