Abdul Abubakari Sadiq, 28, was detained and later found guilty by Ghana Water Limited (GWL) management in the Accra West Region for stealing a water meter.
Based on his own plea, the Nigerian was found guilty by the Weija Circuit Court of willfully and illegally damaging GWL’s meter.
James Kojo Botah presided over the court. filed two allegations against Mr. Sadiq on February 27, 2024.
He entered a guilty plea to the first allegation of willfully and unlawfully causing damage to public property, but he maintained his innocence to the second count, which attempted to prosecute him for theft (despite the fact that he was discovered carrying the meter in his sack).
In addition to being ordered to pay GH2,400 in fines or risk a six-month jail sentence, Mr. Sadiq was also ordered to return to court on April 11, 2024, for a hearing on count two of his charges.
A Kasoa Aman from Toptown resident discovered Mr. Abdul Sadiq on February 23, 2024, carrying a standpipe tap and a water meter in his sack.
Thinking there was no one at home, Mr. Sadiq, who had earlier been spotted driving around the neighborhood in his scrap dealer’s vehicle, destroyed the meter when he entered a compound.
An inhabitant of the residence was awakened by the noise of the breakage, and Sadiq was confronted and taken to the Amanfrom Police Station.
After that, on February 27, 2024, he was found guilty in the Weija Circuit Court after being arraigned.
