Ukrainian European boxing champion Maksym Galinichev died while defending his country against Vladimir Putin’s invading army.
Maksym Galinichev, 22, is said to have died in the Luhansk region while serving with the Ukrainian 25th Sycheslav Airborne Brigade.
Galinichev won home a gold medal for Ukraine at the 2017 and 2018 European Youth Championships. He took part in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics as well.
Anton Gerashchenko, a counsellor to the Ukrainian minister of internal affairs, posted on Twitter to announce that Galinichev had passed away.
Galinichev is the most recent of countless athletes from Ukraine who have lost their lives in battle protecting their nation from Russia’s unlawful invasion, which started last year.

Vladyslav Heraskevych, a fellow Olympian, praised Galinichev for ‘laying down his life’ for Ukraine. He added: ‘Glory to hero.’
Heraskevych said Galinichev was killed on March 10. He wrote that in Spring 2022, the fallen boxer had refused to participate in that year’s European Boxing Championship so that he could volunteer for the airborne assault troops.
