Majority caucus cannot appoint leaders without party involvement – Bagbin

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has made it clear that the political party in charge of the process must be involved for the majority caucus in Parliament to be able to independently select its leaders.

To clarify the procedure for selecting caucus leaders within Parliament, Bagbin made this statement on Wednesday, February 21, during a parliamentary session.

He emphasized how important the political party is in directing and swaying the choice of leaders within the majority.

The Speaker’s explanation comes at a time when rumors are circulating that the ruling party intends to replace the leaders of its majority caucus in Congress.

“I have listened and heard, and I am aware that the parties are experiencing confusion due to this new definition of the new leaders. The new system refers to caucuses instead of parties, as opposed to the previous one which mentioned parties.

According to the previous system, the majority leader is a member of parliament chosen as the official leader of the party or parties with the majority of seats in the house. According to this new order, “designate” now refers to “appoint.”

The majority caucus refers to the members of the party or parties with the greatest number of seats, according to the same standing orders. The caucus is the party wing; I fail to see the distinction. That is the party’s parliamentary wing.

It is impossible to discuss selecting or designating leaders without considering the party in charge of the procedure. That makes no sense to me; this definition is the same.

The Speaker urged MPs who did not agree with him to challenge his views in court. Alhassan Suhuyini, the member of parliament for Tamale North, had earlier asked the speaker of parliament to explain the new standing orders of the house regarding the caucus leaders’ selection.

In his request to the Speaker, Alhassan Suhiyini disclosed that President Akufo-Addo planned to address the crisis tonight with the majority caucus.

The Tamale North MP requested the house’s stance on these issues pending the engagement.

It is anticipated that the Speaker’s comments will have an impact on the current procedures and conversations regarding leadership appointments within the majority caucus.
