Jackson was raised in a strict religious household. She was only allowed to sing in the church choir and secretly listen to recordings of Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, and Enrico Caruso as her own musical endeavors.

There were several entertainers in her father’s family. When she was 16 years old, she moved to Chicago and joined the Greater Salem Baptist Church choir. She quickly became a soloist thanks to her remarkable contralto voice.

When Jackson took part in a cross-country gospel tour in the 1930s and performed songs like “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and “I Can Put My Trust in Jesus,” she grabbed the public’s notice for the first time. God Gonna Separate the Wheat from the Tares, her debut record, was a huge commercial success when it was published in 1934. This resulted in her releasing several further albums.
