In an effort to keep her seat in the Greater Accra Region, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, a member of parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and representative for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, has begun her 2024 parliamentary campaign, focusing on young people.

The NPP delegates applauded and endorsed the MP, who is also the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, and she made the announcement last Friday without facing opposition.

Following a roar of cheers from the delegates, Lydia Agyiri, the electoral officer for the Electoral Commission (EC) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, raised the MP’s hands.

Shortly after the applause, Ms. Alhassan sprang into action, urging the young people to act as “her backbone” in order to keep the seat.

Therefore, the MP has launched a variety of youth empowerment programs to lower unemployment and generate income for everyone in an effort to win the support of the younger generation and hold onto power.

The programs involve training in skills, assisting people in participating in real-world educational initiatives, and involving a lot of people in her constituent projects, which include building roads.

In what is anticipated to be a two-horse contest, she competes against National Democratic Congress (NDC) member and Ghanaian actor John Dumelo.

Despite being confident in her win, the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip declared, “I will not be complacent.”

“Let’s stop arguing and backstabbing so that we can break the eight”. She assured party supporters, “Breaking the eight is possible, and I promise I will not let the party down.”

The current NPP MP, Ms. Alhassan, received 39,851 votes, or 51.36 percent, in the general election of 2020, compared to Mr. Dumelo of the NDC, who came in second with 37,478 votes, or 48.30 percent.

The other candidates in that election were Richard Amegatse, an independent, who received 108 votes, or 0.41 percent of the total, and Gifty Nana Botchwey of the People’s National Convention, who received 160 votes, or 0.21 percent.

One of the oldest constituencies in the Greater Accra Area is the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency. It was established in 1992 and includes portions of Tesano and Roman Ridge as well as East Legon, Shiashi, Airport Residential Area, Dzorwulu, and Abelenkpe.
