Ghana Education Service (GES) has given permission to Senior High/Senior High Technical School students who are 18 years or older to participate in the upcoming limited voter registration exercise.
This directive was outlined in a statement issued by GES on Monday, May 6, and signed by Prince Agyemang-Duah, the Acting Director of Schools and Instructions Division. The statement instructed Regional Directors to ensure that all heads of SHS/SHTS comply with the directive.
“The students have been granted four days off from campus, starting from Tuesday, May 7, 2024, to Friday, May 10, 2024, to take part in the exercise in accordance with the constitutional right of all Ghanaian citizens to vote,” the statement read.
The Electoral Commission (EC) will kick off this year’s limited voter registration exercise on Tuesday, May 7, in preparation for the December 7 general elections. The 21-day exercise will conclude on Monday, May 27, 2024, and is aimed at enrolling individuals who have reached the age of 18 since the last registration.
The EC plans to set up permanent centers at district offices and use mobile teams to register eligible applicants in hard-to-reach electoral areas. The list of registration centers will be provided to Political Parties at least 21 days before the registration exercise begins. This move is part of the EC’s efforts to ensure a smooth registration process leading up to the upcoming elections.
