In an effort to provide visually impaired students with essential ICT skills, a level 300 student at the University of Cape Coast, Ben Essien, in collaboration with the Association of Students with Special Needs, organized a three-day ICT skills training program for students with special needs.
The training, which took place from Thursday, 9th May to Saturday, 11th May, 2024, aimed to equip students with the necessary knowledge to effectively navigate computers and develop proficiency in basic computer skills.
Traditionally, visually impaired students have relied on the braille system for reading and writing. However, the manual nature of braille presents challenges, especially in time-bound assignments. Recognizing the importance of embracing technology, Mr. Essien stressed the significance of introducing ICT skills to visually impaired students, enabling them to independently type and navigate computers.
One of the beneficiaries of the initiative, Opoku Anokye, expressed gratitude to the Ben Essien movement for its commitment to empowering individuals with special needs. He commended the initiative as a display of pure love and dedication to supporting persons with disabilities.
Another beneficiary highlighted the importance of the training, noting her lack of basic IT knowledge prior to the sessions. She expressed appreciation for learning essential skills such as word formatting and showed eagerness to continue learning throughout the training.
Mr. Ben Essien, speaking on the initiative, reiterated the value of equipping special needs students with essential IT skills to enhance their future opportunities. He thanked all participants for their enthusiasm and dedication to the training program.
The ICT Skills Training Exercise signifies a step towards inclusivity and empowerment, demonstrating the University of Cape Coast’s commitment to supporting students with special needs in their academic and professional endeavors.
