A renowned professor at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo, has expressed his disappointment in the leadership of Ghana since gaining independence. According to him, the country’s development trajectory pales in comparison to that of other nations, which he attributes to corruption and misgovernance.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points show, Prof Gyampo remarked, “Leadership since independence has failed Ghana. You look at the level of development elsewhere and you compare it to us, it is like we are trying to do things without our soul for our people.”
He went on to criticize the caliber of individuals in positions of power, stating, “It appears we are being wicked to ourselves and the caliber of people we have selected to power the development they have failed. We hate ourselves, we get into all manner of corruption and misgovernance.”
The professor also highlighted the failure of intellectuals in governance, leading to less educated individuals venturing into political leadership roles. He urged for a shift in mindset, suggesting that individuals with a passion for resolving the country’s challenges, such as market women and footballers, should be given the opportunity to contribute to solutions for issues like water shortages and ‘dumsor’.
In essence, Prof Gyampo emphasized the need for a change in leadership mentality and a more inclusive approach to addressing the country’s pressing issues.
