Labour Commission will be overwhelmed with strikes, says Gamey

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU) strike may be the first of many that are launched this year, according to labour consultant Austin Gamey.

With effect from February 1, 2024, the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU-TUC), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, and the Ghana Association of University Administrators have united to declare a nationwide strike by the TEWUG.

The reason for this action is the government’s alleged disregard for important issues brought up by the unions. Gamey emphasized on Wednesday, January 31, on the Big Bulletin that he is aware of the simmering dissatisfaction among different unions over financial matters because of his vast experience in labour issues.

Our noses are sensitive to these kinds of smells because of the work we do.We are aware that a lot of other unions are worried about debt in one way or another.

The unions are blaming the employer for not meeting their welfare needs, which include, among other things, overtime pay, vehicle maintenance allowance, and tier-two pension funds.

In order to prevent others from saying that they will have to wait before profiting, Gamey issues a clear warning to the employer: “So it’s for the employer, especially its human resource management systems, to be activated to ensure that they are very frontal in dealing with the issues.”

The labor consultant states, “They will join… and there are no words to describe how to handle it because the National Labour Commission will be overburdened and there will be dire consequences.”

It is anticipated that the nationwide strike will significantly affect vital services provided by postsecondary educational institutions. Services like hospital services, teaching and learning classroom setup, security services, and environmental cleaning are probably going to be badly impacted.
