Onion traders at Kwadaso have expressed their reluctance to move to the new market at Atwima Takyiman after the demolition of their former market. The traders cite concerns about the size of the new market and the possibility of being evicted again in the future.
Despite being instructed to relocate to the new market promptly, none of the affected traders had reported to the new site. Some traders resorted to selling their goods on the streets, while others awaited guidance from their leadership.
One trader, Abdullah Issah, highlighted the issue of inadequate space at the new market, stating that the traders were initially allocated 16 plots of land but were moved to only 8 plots. This disparity has led to apprehension among the traders about the suitability of the new market.
The traders, who were previously relocated from Alabar to Kwadaso in 2011, are now being asked to move again to Atwima Takyiman. Concerns about facing another eviction prompted the traders to seek ownership of a spacious piece of land where they can trade without fear of displacement.
Secretary to the onion traders, Umar Abdulai, emphasized the importance of securing a place of their own to avoid uncertainty and lack of control over the land. The traders are advocating for a permanent solution that guarantees their safety and stability in their trading activities.
The Kwadaso Municipal Assembly has assured the traders that the new market is a permanent location for them.
Additionally, efforts are being made to secure additional space near the area to accommodate traders who may not find space in the new market.
