Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the majority leader in parliament and the MP for Suame Constituency, has hinted that the government plans to finish the abandoned Kumasi Airport by May 2024.
In reaction to statements made by former president John Dramani Maham during his 24-hour economy walk in Kumasi, the minister of parliamentary affairs stated that the current government had given up on the Kumasi Airport project, which was initiated under his administration.
“President Mahama accepts the fact that the Kumasi Airport wasn’t 60% complete. Today, the Kumasi Airport is 90% complete. so you can’t say the government hasn’t done anything about it”. The show’s host, Kwame Tanko, was informed by Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu.
He also mentioned that by the end of April or early May of 2024, the project is expected to be operationalized and commissioned.
The construction of a new terminal with the capacity to house one million passengers annually marked the beginning of the second phase of the Kumasi Airport plan in 2018.
In addition to other facilities, this phase saw the construction of a parking lot, a substation, a road network, a perimeter barrier, and two boarding bridges. At Ghana’s second busiest airport, Phase II development is expected to cost £66,350,000.
Turning now to Phase III of the Kumasi Airport development, this section calls for building a new taxi connection, two apron parking stands, an air traffic control building, a fire station, and other structures in addition to extending the current runway pavement from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters.
An estimated £58,900,000 is the expected cost of Phase III. The project is expected to be completed and operational in its entirety by the final months of 2024.
