Patrick Kwame Frimpong, an outspoken assembly member for the Krofrom East electoral area, has been successfully re-elected to the position of presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
With an astounding 55 “YES votes” from the 66 assembly members, Frimpong’s candidacy was confirmed. After the first round of voting, in which none of the three candidates was able to garner a two-thirds majority, the election was forced into a runoff.
The two leading candidates, Aggripa Opoku and Ernest Ofori Baffour, received five and 19 votes, respectively, while the incumbent received 34 votes. Baffour withdrew from the race, however, leaving the incumbent unchallenged even though Opoku was losing.
Frimpong has pledged to unite the Assembly and promote grassroots development. With a renewed mandate, he promises to bring positive change and progress to the people served by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
Meanwhile, Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne says KMA is still committed to enforcing sanitation laws to rid the city of filth. Last year, at least 20 people went to court for violating sanitation laws. Sam Pyne has warned that perpetrators will not be spared.
The election follows the inauguration and swearing-in of the Assembly’s ninth members. The event was attended by the Minister for Local Government Decentralization and Rural Development, Dan Kwaku Botwe, Members of Parliament, traditional rulers, and clergy.
