Energy analyst, Nana Amoasi VII, has defended the government’s decision to rename the AMERI power plants to Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP). According to him, this move is in line with the Volta River Authority’s naming conventions for power plants.
The Africa and Middle East Resource Investment (AMERI) plants were brought to Ghana under a “built, own, operate and transfer” agreement, and have now been officially handed over to the government. Nana Amoasi VII emphasized that the plants are now owned and operated by Ghana, with the VRA taking charge.
He explained that the renaming was necessary as the plants were no longer owned by the African Middle East and Resource Investment Company after five years of operation. The energy analyst pointed out that the VRA’s naming pattern for power plants is based on their location, citing examples like the Kpone Thermal power station and Tema Thermal 1 power plant.
Nana Amoasi VII urged political actors to avoid turning this issue into a political debate and focus on the economic benefits. Moving the thermal plants to Kumasi is crucial for mitigating the power challenges in the area, he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of reinforcing the voltage within the grid and ensuring power transmission to the northern zone. The VRA has scheduled the official commissioning of the K1TPP in Anwomaso, Kumasi, for Wednesday, April 17.
