Achievers Pharmacy Konongo branch was closed on Friday, February 2, 2024, as a result of a police and Pharmacy Council coordinated operation in the Ashanti Region.
This is the second closure of the facility; an earlier branch in Obuasi is anticipated to face a similar fate in 2023. Pharmacy Council representatives expressed concerns about public safety, highlighting the pharmacy’s illegal operations.
Benjamin Kwarteng Frimpong, the Ashanti regional director of the Pharmacy Council, states that “that facility was not registered per our books and records.” Consequently, as part of our investigation, we gathered the evidence and carried out an official site visit. With the assistance of the police, we were able to ascertain that the facility was operating without a valid license.
“In addition, we found that people who weren’t authorized were selling restricted drugs without the proper inventory, and we had to close the facility because it posed a risk to public safety,” he explained.
The Pharmacy Council closed more than 100 pharmacies in Ghana between September and November of 2023 for operating illegally and giving out the wrong prescriptions. Kwarteng Frimpong stated that the council is committed to enforcing its laws and will continue to prosecute pharmacies that violate them.
“Public safety must be ensured, and once you decide to work in this industry, you must follow all laws and guidelines. “This year, we intend to take strong action against pharmaceutical facility operators who fail to maintain proper registration or who continue to operate under expired licenses,” he stated.
