John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the opposition NDC Party and a former president of Ghana, has stated that he is against the LGBTQ community in advance of the elections in December.
The former president declared that homosexual marriage and being transgender went against his Christian values during a meeting with clergymen in eastern Ghana.
In response to a religious leader’s criticism of LGBTQ+ individuals, Mahama stated, “The faith I have will not allow me to accept a man marrying a man, and a woman marrying a woman,”.
“I don’t think anyone can wake up and decide they feel like a man even though they were born a woman, and I will change and become a man,” he continued.
But if Mahama wins in December, he has not indicated whether he would sign the bill that criminalizes same-sex relationships, being transgender, and supporting LGBTQ rights.
Since August 2021, lawmakers in the West African country have been discussing the Ghanaian Family Values Bill and Human Sexual Rights.
Proponents and opponents of the law argue that it will further curtail liberties in a nation where homosexual activity is already illegal and can result in up to three years in prison.
