Jimmie Lou Fisher death: What happened to Jimmie Lou Fisher?

She died from an unknown illness per reports.

Jimmie Lou Fisher served as State Auditor for one year. When Nancy Hall, Arkansas’s first woman elected as a statewide constitutional officer, retired after 18 years, she campaigned for state treasurer.

Due to her tremendous ties inside the Arkansas Democratic Party, Fisher easily won the primary. She subsequently handily won the General Election, becoming only the third woman in Arkansas history to be elected to statewide office (behind Hall and Senator Hattie Caraway).

She went on to win three two-year terms and four four-year terms as state treasurer, serving a total of 22 years as state treasurer, making her the longest-serving state treasurer in state history.

Aside from that, she was heavily involved in Democratic politics at the time. From 1976 to 1978, she was Vice Chairman of the Arkansas Democratic State Committee, and from 1976 to 1978, she was a member of the Democratic National Committee.

She served as the 1st Congressional District Coordinator for then-Arkansas Attorney General Bill Clinton’s eventually successful race for governor in 1978.
