President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo holds the power to sign the anti-gay bill into law in Ghana, as emphasized by spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu. Ghanaians are eagerly anticipating his decision on this matter.
During an appearance on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu discussed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s rejection of gay practices, highlighting the need for action against such behaviors. He stressed the importance of President Akufo-Addo taking a stand and signing the bill to criminalize anti-LGBTQ+ activities.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, also known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, was passed by Parliament, but awaits the President’s assent. The bill outlines penalties for individuals engaged in LGBTQ+ practices prohibited under the law.
Despite calls from various religious bodies urging the President to sign the bill, Akufo-Addo has advised patience as the Supreme Court reviews the constitutionality of the legislation. The President emphasized Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law, reassuring that there will be no regression on these principles.
However, Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, challenged Vice President Bawumia to either resign or push for the bill’s signing if he disagrees with the President’s stance on the issue. The ongoing debate surrounding the bill demonstrates the importance of upholding cultural and societal norms in Ghana.
