The group is composed of El-P, a Brooklyn-based rapper and producer, and Killer Mike, an Atlanta-based rapper.

He first came onto the music scene as a solo artist.

The other group member Killer Mike has also been active since 1995. Just like his partner, he also started out as a solo artist.

Their critically acclaimed self-titled debut studio album was released in 2013 and was free for download. Their follow-up albums Run the Jewels 2 (2014), Run the Jewels 3 (2016), and RTJ4 (2020), have all been released for free and also received critical acclaim.
