Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., better known as Nelly, is an American rapper, singer, actor, and businessman. Nelly began his music career in 1993 with the hip hop group St. Lunatics and signed with Universal Records in 1999.

Nelly launched his solo career under Universal in the year 2000, with his debut album Country Grammar, which featured the title track and the single “Ride wit Me,” both of which were top ten hits.

Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., the only son of Cornell Haynes and Rhonda Mack, was born in Austin, Texas. His father was in the Air Force for much of his childhood, and his parents divorced when he was seven. Haynes moved from St. Louis to University City, a St. Louis County suburb, with his mother when he was a teenager. Nelly formed the St. Lunatics in high school with his friends Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, Slo Down, and his half brother City Spud.

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and went on to become Nelly’s best-selling album to date, selling more than 8.4 million copies in the United States. His following album Nellyville produced the number-one hits “Hot in Herre” and “Dilemma”, along with the top five single “Air Force Ones”.
