Martin Scorsese has received numerous prestigious honors, including the 2007 Kennedy Center Honor, an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, three Emmy Awards, four British Academy Film Awards, two Directors Guild of America Awards, and an AFI Life Achievement Award.

The Library of Congress has recognized five of his films as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important” and added them to the National Film Registry.

On November 17, 1942, Martin Scorsese was born in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Before he began school, his family relocated to Little Italy in Manhattan.

Charles Scorsese and Catherine Scorsese (born Cappa), Scorsese’s parents, were both employed in the Garment District of New York City. Catherine worked as a seamstress and an actress, while Charles was a clothes presser.

Martin graduated in 1960 from the all-boys Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. He first wanted to become a priest and enrolled in a prep school, but he dropped out after the first year.

As a result, Scorsese enrolled at NYU’s Washington Square College (now known as the College of Arts and Science), where he graduated with a B.A. in English in 1964. This was followed by the advent of the motion picture industry.

In 1968, the year the school was established, he went on to receive his MA from New York University’s School of Education (now the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development).

Is Martin Scorsese a Sicilian?

Martin Scorsese was born to Sicilian immigrant parents Charles and Catherine Scorsese in Flushing, Queens. Around 1880, Francesco Scorsese, Martin’s paternal grandpa, was born in Polizzi Generosa, a town close to Palermo.

After his mother passed away when he was six or seven years old, Francesco was sent to live with a nearby farmer who reared him after his father remarried. Francesco made the decision to immigrate to the US since he was unwilling to stay in Sicily.
