Underfunding and lack of resources are hampering the effective implementation of mental health policies and programs in Ghana, according to Dan Taylor, the Executive Secretary of Mind Freedom Ghana.
This lack of commitment threatens the sustainability of humane treatment for mental health conditions in the country.
Taylor, along with other stakeholders, is calling on the Ministry of Finance to establish a Mental Health Levy to provide funding for the Mental Health Fund. The Mental Health Act of 2012 in Ghana emphasizes the direct responsibility of both state and non-state entities to protect and promote the rights of individuals with mental health conditions.
Despite the legal framework in place, the lack of resources is hindering proper implementation, resulting in challenges for mental health facilities and patients who cannot afford treatment. Taylor highlighted the necessity of instituting a mental health levy to replenish the depleted Mental Health Fund.
At a community awareness event in Adankwaame, stakeholders including traditional leaders, religious leaders, and local assembly members gathered to educate the community on mental health conditions and provide support for individuals with mental health disorders. The event also featured discussions on the need to end stigma, discrimination, and physical abuse towards individuals with mental health conditions.
Ashanti Regional Mental Health Coordinator, Faustina Nuako, commended the efforts of organizations like Free Mind Ghana in addressing mental health crises and improving mental health services in Ghana. She noted the positive collaboration between healthcare facilities and authorities in addressing mental health issues.
Rita Okyere, a Senior Nurse Officer at the Asuofia Polyclinic, emphasized the importance of treating individuals with mental health conditions with dignity and respect. She called for unity and support for those facing mental health challenges.
Overall, the push for a Mental Health Levy reflects the urgent need for adequate funding and resources to support mental healthcare delivery in Ghana and ensure the well-being of individuals with mental health conditions.
