Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams says he will “defend the Ghana shirt” after confirming in a social media video that he will now represent Ghana’s Black Stars.

In recent months, the 28-year-old Spaniard football pro has been linked with a nationality switch to Ghana, with several media houses reporting that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had established contact with his parents years ago.

Apparently, Inaki was born in Spain to Ghanaian parents and is therefore eligible to play for his native country.

On May 29, 2016, he made his debut in Spain. However, the striker did not make another competitive appearance for Spain, tying him to the European country. As a result, he qualified for a nationality change under FIFA rules.

Iaki and his younger brother Nico Williams spent their summer vacation in Ghana to connect with their roots.

It is believed that GFA officials completed the paperwork for Inaki while he was on vacation in Ghana. At the moment he is now eligible to represent Ghana in all FIFA-sanctioned tournaments and could do so as early as September.
