Hours after being asked to leave the House by the Speaker, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, expressed his lingering shock over the incident. He explained that he was merely trying to bring attention to the Speaker’s lack of authority to make prejudicial statements.
In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Dr Afriyie defended his actions, stating that there was no disrespect or misconduct on his part. He emphasized that the Speaker had given him permission to speak, making the extreme outcome surprising to him.
During Monday’s proceedings, the Speaker informed the House about the nomination of new judges to the Supreme Court. Dr Afriyie interpreted the Speaker’s remarks as prejudicial and believed it was not within the Speaker’s purview to remind MPs of prior statements.
Dr Afriyie noted that as the elected representative of Sefwi Wiawso, he felt obligated to alert the Speaker to his concerns. He felt that the Speaker’s comments on the new judge nominations suggested bias rather than neutrality.
Dr Afriyie concluded by asserting that his actions were not intended to disrespect the Speaker but to bring attention to what he perceived as biased behavior. The Speaker’s participation in debates rather than maintaining a neutral stance was a point of contention for Dr Afriyie.
