The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, recently met with representatives of various Teacher Unions at the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) head office in Accra.

During this meeting, Mr. Mahama shared his vision for the educational sector, highlighting his plans for educational reform within his first 100 days in office should he win the upcoming elections.

One of the key points discussed was the adoption of ‘first language’ as a medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Basic 3, as well as the training of more teachers in local languages to enhance teaching and learning at the basic levels. Additionally, Mr. Mahama expressed his commitment to building more libraries, providing reading and textbooks for all basic schools, and ensuring the timely disbursement of the capitation grant to education directorates and schools.

Furthermore, the former President outlined his plans to revive abandoned Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and E-blocks in an effort to decongest schools and improve the quality of education. He also discussed his intentions to review and enhance the implementation of the Free SHS policy, address associated challenges, and incorporate TVET and STEM subjects in all secondary schools.

In a post-meeting statement, Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of collaboration with teacher unions and other stakeholders to develop effective education policies. He expressed his eagerness to work together to build a more inclusive and better education system for the children of Ghana and the future of the nation.
