Iggy Pop (born James Newell Osterberg Jr. on April 21, 1947) is an American singer, musician, radio announcer, songwriter, and actor. He was the vocalist and lyricist for the proto-punk band The Stooges, which began in 1967 and has disbanded and reformed numerous times since.

The Stooges were known for their aggressive shows, which frequently included Pop mutilating himself. Over the course of his career, he had a long creative relationship and friendship with David Bowie. He popularized stage diving as one of the first entertainers to do it.

“Lust for Life,” “The Passenger,” and “Real Wild Child (Wild One”) are among Pop’s solo hits. In 1990, he had his first and only Top 40 hit in the United States with “Candy,” a duet with B-52s singer Kate Pierson. Pop’s song “China Girl” became more well-known after co-writer David Bowie re-recorded it.

Pop of The Stooges was elected into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. The Idiot, his solo album, has been regarded as a key influence on a number of post-punk, electronic, and industrial artists. Pop was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2020.
