In a recent discussion on the JoyNews AM show, private legal practitioner Kweku Paintsil emphasized the importance of freedom in a democracy compared to the strict restrictions under a military regime.
Despite acknowledging the imperfections in Ghana’s system, Mr. Paintsil emphasized that democratic governance is still the preferred option.
A new Afrobarometer report highlighted the growing dissatisfaction among African youth, who feel marginalized in governance decision-making and are increasingly agitated. Mr. Paintsil reflected on his experience living under a revolution where voices were silenced and expressed gratitude for the freedom democracy provides.
On the same show, the leader of the Economic Fighters League, Ernesto Yeboah, discussed the academic perspective of military rule, noting that it offers an alternate approach to politics. He cited positive developments in the Sahel region, particularly in Niger and Burkina Faso, and expressed hope for similar progress in Ghana.
Mr. Yeboah highlighted encouraging steps taken in the Sahel region, such as opting out of ECOWAS and establishing their own currency.
He also mentioned the accountability measures in place, where individuals are being held responsible for past financial wrongdoings. The prospect of military leaders demanding the return of stolen funds received positive feedback, indicating a potential shift in the perception of military rule.
While addressing the age disparity in leadership, Mr. Paintsil raised concerns about the limited role of youth in Ghanaian politics compared to other regions. The discussion shed light on the diverse perspectives on governance and the ongoing political struggles in the country.
